West Point Cadet Camp is a glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of images made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from unverified notes written on the negative or its caption card, so the exact date and the precise setting of the camp are not confirmed here. Still, the subject places it at the United States Military Academy in Highland Falls, New York, where summer encampments gave cadets field training in camp life, drill and outdoor instruction. Images like this one document how the Academy trained its officers and how the Bain agency covered national institutions for a public eager to see them.
