German marines carrying wounded comrades on a stretcher make up the focus of this glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. The Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency that supplied newspapers with pictures from the 1900s through the 1920s, catalogued its negatives from captions and cards that were often written quickly, so the title here is unverified and the date is unrecorded. Even so, the scene fits the naval and wartime coverage the agency circulated, and the image offers a close look at how stretcher crews worked under fire during the First World War.
