The Bain News Service titled many of its pictures from unverified notes on the negatives or caption cards, so the subject could be a person, a place or an event. Bain was a New York news photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers, and its nitrate negatives from the 1910s are notably fragile, since the film is flammable and deteriorates over time. The date falls only months after the United States entered World War I in April 1917, a period when the agency's output reflected a country adjusting to wartime life.
