Catalogued under the name Tamaki Miura, this glass negative is linked to a Japanese soprano who became a well-known figure on American opera stages in the 1910s, most famously in the title role of Puccini's *Madama Butterfly*. The record gives no date, and the name comes from data the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its caption card, which the Library of Congress has not verified. The Bain News Service was a New York photo agency whose negatives, made mostly between about 1900 and the 1920s, document theater, politics and everyday life, so the portrait is best read as a press image of its era.
