The title names the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, the oldest common carrier in the United States, and places the wreck in Washington, though the Bain News Service's caption data was never verified, so the exact location and date remain uncertain. The glass negative comes from George Grantham Bain's agency, which supplied newspapers with news photographs from roughly 1900 through the 1920s. Railway accidents of that era often drew press photographers to show the twisted cars, damaged track, and crowds of onlookers and rescue crews. The image is a useful record of how such wrecks were documented before newsreels became common.
