Little is recorded about this negative beyond its title, "Birmingham," which the Bain News Service noted on its caption cards without verification, so the city it shows could be any of several places with that name. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from a New York news photo agency that sent pictures of current events, people and places to newspapers. Its glass negatives, made in the early twentieth century before flexible film became standard, are valued for documenting that period's cities, streets and public life. Viewers should treat the title as a starting point and look closely at the image for clues to its location.
