The Mississippi River power plant at Keokuk, Iowa, harnessed the river's fall over the Des Moines Rapids to generate electricity for the surrounding region. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied newspapers in the early twentieth century, made the negative, so the picture was likely meant for press use. With no date recorded, the exact year is uncertain, but the dam's construction in the 1910s places it in an era when hydroelectric projects symbolized modern engineering. Note the scale of the structure against the open river.
