At Keokuk, Iowa, engineers spanned the Mississippi and harnessed its fall over the Des Moines Rapids, and the caption credits the works with 200,000 horsepower. Built in the early 1910s, the plant was among the largest water-powered installations of its day. The Bain News Service, a press photo agency, documented many such industrial projects, and this view presents the dam as a showpiece of the era's confidence in engineering and electric power.
