Riverside Drive, the boulevard that follows the Hudson River along Manhattan's Upper West Side, is the subject here, and the title points to a view of it at night with its lights on. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s into the 1920s. The title came from the agency's notes on the negative or caption card and has not been independently verified, so the exact date and occasion remain uncertain. Even so, the scene reflects a period when electric lighting was changing city streets after dark.
