Harry Houdini, the escape artist and illusionist, is the figure named in this glass negative, one of the many portraits and stage subjects that the Bain News Service made and kept in its files. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified notes written by the agency on the negative or its caption card, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York around 1899, supplied news photographs to newspapers, and Houdini was a headline performer in that period, known for chains, locked trunks and water tanks. The glass plate format of the collection is itself worth noticing, since it preserves fine detail from the early twentieth century.
