Economist Scott Nearing, named in this glass negative, was one of the most outspoken critics of American business and social policy in the early twentieth century. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania until 1915, when his attacks on child labor and corporate power led to his dismissal. The negative was made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency whose photographers covered politicians, public figures and events, but the record gives no date, and the name comes only from unverified caption data. Nearing later became known for his writing on socialism and for his back-to-the-land homesteading in Vermont.
