The only identification for this negative is the name John M. Ward, which the Library of Congress lists as unverified, so the sitter's role and the occasion remain uncertain. The plate belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that began around 1899 and sold news photographs to newspapers. Its glass negatives were typically made quickly for daily publication, so individual sitters are often hard to trace without their original caption cards.
