A portrait of a clergyman, Fr. John J. Kiernan, is the subject of this glass negative, though the name comes from caption cards that the Bain News Service wrote without independent verification, so the sitter's identity and date remain open. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency around 1899 to supply newspapers with news and feature pictures, and its glass plates, typically 5 by 7 inches or smaller, were made for quick reproduction in print. The collection now at the Library of Congress preserves a large share of those negatives, and portraits like this one show how the agency documented public figures of the early twentieth century.
