Archibald Henry Sayce, the Oxford professor of Assyriology named on this glass negative, was a leading British scholar of Babylonian and Assyrian texts and an early student of the Hittites. Bain News Service, a New York press photography agency, made portraits like this of prominent figures, and its captions were often taken from names supplied at the time, so the identification rests on that original label. The record gives no date, but Sayce's career spanned the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
