West Point Cadet Camp is one of the Bain News Service glass negatives, a small format plate taken at the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, the Army's officer-training school on the Hudson River. The caption, like the rest of the collection, comes from the news service's own notes, and the record gives no firm date, so the exact summer or year is unknown. Still, the subject places it in a long-standing tradition: the Academy ran summer encampments where cadets lived in tents, drilled and practiced field routines away from the stone barracks. Bain's staff photographed many such scenes for newspapers, so the picture offers a useful glimpse of daily military life in the early twentieth century.
