Woodblock prints like this one, dated to 1750, come from the early decades of Japan's Edo period, when printmakers were turning out inexpensive images of actors, courtesans, and city life for a growing urban public. The record does not name a particular scene or artist, so it is best read as an example of the form. Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," were made by carving a design into wood blocks, inking them, and pressing paper over them, which allowed many copies from a single design. Look for the outlined figures and the flat fields of color, which are hallmarks of the style.
