Dated 1750 in its record, this Japanese ukiyo-e print comes from the Edo period, when woodblock printing turned images of actors, courtesans and city life into affordable popular art. The name means "pictures of the floating world," a phrase for the theaters and pleasure quarters of Edo, now Tokyo. Prints from around this date usually have a restrained palette, since full-color printing came later, so look for the fine outlines and the careful layering of colors that mark the craft.
