Unlike the photographs around it, this entry describes a Japanese ukiyo-e print, a woodblock image rather than a photograph, and its record gives 1750 as the date. That places it in the early decades of the "floating world" tradition, when urban printmakers in Edo and Kyoto produced affordable pictures of actors, courtesans, and scenes of everyday pleasure for a growing merchant audience. Ukiyo-e prints were made by carving an image into blocks, one per color, so the lines and tones in such a print reflect a team of carvers, printers, and publishers. The record does not name a maker, so the particular artist and original context remain unknown.
