Dated 1750 in its record, this is a Japanese ukiyo-e print, though its label is contradictory: it calls the piece a "photo print," yet ukiyo-e were woodblock prints, not photographs. Ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," flourished in Edo-period cities, where artists and publishers made images of actors, courtesans, landscapes, and scenes of urban life for a broad merchant audience. Around 1750 the form was still mostly monochrome or lightly hand-colored, since the full multicolor printing that made the style famous arrived about fifteen years later. Researchers should verify the date and maker against the original source.
