This woodblock print from Japan is dated in its record to 1750, so it belongs to the Edo period rather than to the photographic era its gallery name suggests. Ukiyo-e, meaning "pictures of the floating world," were made by carving a design into wooden blocks, inking each block in a different color, and pressing them onto paper, which allowed one image to be printed many times. Prints of this kind often showed actors, beautiful women, and scenes from urban life, and they were affordable enough for ordinary townspeople to buy. The record names no artist or subject, so the exact scene is unknown, but the crisp outlines and flat areas of color are typical of the technique.
