Listed with a date of 1750, this example falls early in Japan's Edo period, when ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," were made by carving designs into wood blocks and printing them by hand. The record calls it a photo print, but ukiyo-e is a woodblock tradition, so that label is likely a cataloguing error. Such prints were affordable entertainment for townspeople in cities like Edo, showing actors, beauties and scenes of everyday life. Full-color printing, which later made the genre famous, did not arrive until about 1765, so a print of this date would have used fewer colors.
