Among the Japanese fine prints on this board, this one carries the number 9 in its title, and its record dates it to around 1750, when Edo was becoming a major center of popular woodblock printmaking. Ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world," showed actors, courtesans, landscapes, and scenes of city life, made by carving a design into wooden blocks, inking them, and pressing paper against them, so one composition could be printed many times. The record does not name an artist or subject, so the sheet is best read as an example of that broader tradition. Collectors often notice its flat areas of color and bold outlines.
