Leon Herrmann, billed as "Herrmann the Great," was a French-born stage magician whose touring shows made him one of the best-known conjurers in America in the late 1800s. This large color lithograph, nearly two meters tall, was a theatrical poster meant to be seen from a distance on city streets and in theater lobbies. It was produced by the H.C. Miner Litho. Co. of New York, a firm that printed many bold advertising posters for stage performers of the period. Its dramatic imagery and oversized format show how magicians of that era relied on eye-catching print to draw audiences.
