Few magic posters of the period reached this scale, and this one, at about 200 by 105 centimeters, was built to be seen from across a street. It advertises "Herrmann the Great," the stage name of Leon Herrmann (1867-1909), a French-born illusionist who toured American theaters. The name had earlier belonged to his older brother, Alexander, and Leon kept it after Alexander's death in 1896. The poster was printed in color by the H.C. Miner Lithographing Company of New York, a firm known for theatrical advertising in the late 1800s, and it reflects the lavish, bill-topping style that touring magicians used to draw audiences.
