Old Judge is the title the Library gave this albumen print, a baseball card issued by Goodwin & Company, the New York tobacco firm that packed similar cards inside its Old Judge cigarettes. The N172 designation comes from the numbering system collectors later used to catalog tobacco-issued cards of this period. Cards like this were printed from photographs and mounted on stiff stock, and in the late 1880s they gave fans a rare chance to own a likeness of a professional ballplayer. The print belongs to the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection, which holds many such cards from the era.
