Tobacco companies packed cards like this one into cigarette packages to encourage repeat purchases, and this example is one of the T3 Turkey Red series that the American Tobacco Company issued around 1911. The Library's title echoes the Turkey Red cigarette brand the series was tied to. Its chromolithographic printing, with bright inks and hand-applied color, reflects the commercial printing standards of the period. Cards like this were meant to be kept, traded and pasted into albums, which is why so many survive. This one comes from the Benjamin K. Edwards Collection of baseball cards in the Library's Prints and Photographs Division.
