Naval aviator Richard Evelyn Byrd is identified here by his rank of Lieutenant Commander, which he held in the mid-1920s while building a reputation as a pioneer of polar flight. The photograph is dated June 9, 1925, a period when Byrd was involved with the Navy's support of the MacMillan Arctic Expedition, which carried seaplanes toward Greenland and Ellesmere Island. Byrd went on to fly over the North Pole in 1926 and later led expeditions to Antarctica, becoming one of the best-known explorers of his era. The date comes from an old caption card and has not been independently verified, so treat it as a working date.
