The caption card gives this picture the title "Bologna," and a label ties it to Hartford, Connecticut, the city that anchors its place on this board. Lewis Hine took it in March 1909 while documenting children in street trades for the National Child Labor Committee, which used such images to press for limits on young workers selling goods and running errands on city streets. The record places it in an album of Hine's street-trade work and attributes it to him based on that provenance. Its value lies in how it records the working lives of ordinary city children at a time when child labor was openly accepted.
