Harriet Beecher Stowe's house in Hartford, Connecticut, is the subject here, shown from the outside in a stereograph card dated around 1909. Stowe lived in the house from 1873 until her death in 1896, and it was there that she wrote and revised many of her later works. The house stands on Forest Street near the Mark Twain House, and the two neighboring homes reflect the prosperous literary community that gathered in Hartford in the late nineteenth century. Stereo cards like this one were made to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional effect.
