This elevation shows the front of the Library of Congress as it was planned for its site in Washington, D.C., drawn in ink and graphite on paper. The building was designed by architects John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, whose plans were chosen after a competition in the 1870s, and it opened in 1897 as the nation's library, later named for Thomas Jefferson. Architectural drawings like this one show the proportions, ornament, and symmetry of the facade before construction, so they reveal how the architects meant the building to look as a civic monument.
