Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day's inaugural ceremonies. The title comes from data the company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, and the Library of Congress notes it has not been independently verified, so the exact moment captured is open to some question. Glass negatives of this era were coated by hand, and the streaks and blemishes visible on this one are typical of coatings that have deteriorated over the decades since the plate was made.
