Herbert Hoover took the oath as the 31st president on March 4, 1929, on the East Portico of the Capitol in Washington, and this glass negative is likely a record of that day. It comes from the National Photo Company, a Washington studio that documented the city and its public ceremonies in the early twentieth century. The title was supplied by the company and has not been independently verified. Streaks and blemishes across the plate come from the natural breakdown of its original coating, a common condition in glass negatives of this age.
