Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that event under a title supplied by the company itself, which the Library of Congress notes is unverified. The plate is a small 4 x 5 inch negative, and its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coatings, a common sign of age in glass plates from this period. Such negatives were a standard way for commercial studios of the era to document Washington ceremonies, so the image offers a direct look at how the inauguration was recorded in its own time.
