Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day in Washington. The record gives the title "Hoover Inauguration, 1929," but it is noted as unverified, so the scene itself is best read as the inaugural occasion rather than a closely identified moment. Hoover, a former Commerce Secretary and engineer, had won the 1928 election in a landslide and took office just before the stock market crash later that year. Because the plate is a glass negative, its surface shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of the original coating.
