Herbert Hoover took the oath of office on March 4, 1929, and this glass negative from the National Photo Company Collection records that day under the title "Hoover Inauguration, 1929." The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C. studio that documented the city's public life for decades, so its negatives capture the ceremonies, crowds and officials that made the capital what it was in the period. Hoover, a former Commerce Secretary and engineer who had led wartime food relief in Europe, entered office just months before the stock market crash of October 1929. Visitors should note that the title comes from unverified data written on the negative or its sleeve, and the glass shows streaks and blemishes from age.
