Uncle Sam throws a punch at the Kaiser in this 1917 lithograph, and the blow is a bond: the fist is wrapped in a coat labeled "Liberty Bond." Sculptor Jo Davidson designed the poster for the Liberty Loan Committee, which sold war bonds to help pay for the United States' entry into World War I that April. The dollar figure in the title points to the scale of borrowing the government needed. The image turns a financial appeal into a boxing match, a pitch that asked ordinary Americans to fight the war with their savings.
