This 1919 recruiting poster pitched Army service as a free tour: 50,000 men were wanted for the American Expeditionary Forces, with a chance to see Paris, the Rhine and its castles, and the battlefields of Europe. The armistice had ended the fighting in November 1918, but American troops stayed in the occupied Rhineland, so the Army still needed men for overseas duty. The listed openings in infantry, cavalry, field artillery, engineers, and the medical department show that the postwar force was still being filled. The poster presents the battlefields as sights to visit rather than as places of recent combat.
