Few recruiting posters from 1917 address the reader so directly, and this one names a specific unit, the Second Artillery, with the dates 1840 to 1917 printed beneath its title. Issued in Philadelphia by the Committee of Public Safety's Department of Military Service and printed by The Colonial Press, this color lithograph uses no portrait or battle scene, so its appeal rests entirely on its headline question, "Will you be one?" The United States had entered the First World War in April 1917, and that spring and summer brought many appeals like this one as the army sought volunteers. The poster is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection.
