Titled for the day itself, this color lithograph calls American men to register on June 5, 1917, the first nationwide draft registration under the Selective Service Act passed that May. Uncle Sam, the familiar national figure of the period, serves as the call to duty, and the poster quotes Woodrow Wilson describing the day as one of "patriotic devotion and obligation." Printed in Philadelphia for the Pennsylvania Committee of Public Safety, it shows how state agencies worked to turn federal conscription into a civic duty that millions of men were expected to fulfill.
