Many wartime recruiting posters leaned on bold illustration, but this one relies on printed text alone, announcing a Navy recruiting week from April 28 to May 5, 1917. The United States had entered the war on April 6, only three weeks before that span began, and the Navy, like the Army, needed to expand its ranks quickly. Posters like this were displayed in post offices, storefronts and public squares to reach men who might not otherwise consider enlisting. The print is part of the Willard and Dorothy Straight Collection, a group of wartime posters now held by the Library of Congress.
