Kenyon Cox, a painter and muralist who was an academician of the National Academy of Design, made this 1917 color lithograph for the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station. Its title, "The Sword is Drawn, the Navy Upholds It!", was written as the country entered the First World War in April 1917, when the Navy needed to expand quickly. Cox's allegorical style, common among artists who worked with the government during the war, was meant to lend enlistment a sense of duty and national purpose. The poster's large format and its signature with the artist's monogram make it a useful example of how wartime recruiting art borrowed the language of heroic painting.
