This halftone poster, printed by the Navy Recruiting Bureau in New York, puts the depth charge at the center of its appeal: a weapon that attacked submarines below the surface. It dates from roughly 1917 to 1918, after the United States entered the First World War in April 1917, when German U-boats were sinking merchant ships in the Atlantic and the Navy needed large numbers of enlisted men for destroyers and escort vessels. Recruiting posters of this era used dramatic images of naval action to draw young men into service. The poster also appeared in a scrapbook titled "What the Navy is doing," which shows how such images were gathered to document the wartime service.
