Its title does the work: a Navy recruiting poster that promises a job to anyone weary of job hunting, offered "by courtesy of the New York Tribune" with "apologies to Briggs." The nod is to Clare Briggs, the cartoonist whose comic panels of everyday American life ran in the Tribune, and the poster borrows his light, domestic humor to make its pitch. Dated 1918, it comes from the last year of American involvement in World War I, when the Navy competed with the army and private employers for men and used familiar newspaper styles to reach ordinary readers.
