Norman Lindsay's *The trumpet calls* is a color lithograph poster from 1914, made for Australia's early wartime recruiting effort, when the country was raising its volunteer army for the First World War. Its catalog subjects point to enlistment, Australian soldiers, and firearms, which place it firmly within that call to arms. Lindsay was already one of Australia's best-known illustrators, and his strong draftsmanship suited posters meant to be taken in quickly from a street wall. The sheet later passed through the Rehse Archiv für Zeitgeschichte und Publizistik, a German collection of war-era material.
