This 1917 German work carries the title "Zum Kampf aufs Letzte sind wir herausgefordert!", roughly "We are challenged to the final struggle," and its wording alone shows the appeal it was making. By 1917 Germany was more than three years into a war that had drained its population and economy, and official messaging increasingly framed the conflict as a fight for national survival. Posters like this one addressed civilians on the home front, urging them to keep working, buying war bonds, and holding out. Its insistence on a last, decisive effort reflects how government propaganda in all the warring nations tried to sustain morale as the war dragged on.
