A plowing farmer and the slogan "This is how it would go for us under Poland! We farmers vote for Germany!" set this poster apart from the many World War I images on this board, because it urges a German vote rather than attacking an enemy. Made in 1920 by the artist Kirchbach, it addressed voters in border regions where the Treaty of Versailles called for plebiscites on whether territory would belong to Germany or Poland. Its appeal rests on rural livelihood: the farmer's land and work are presented as threatened by Polish rule. The lithograph shows that the war's aftermath was contested in print as well as on the battlefield.
