The poster's most distinctive feature is its pairing of a Marian statue with heraldic escutcheons, which ties the Bavarian People's Party's message to Catholic devotion and regional pride. Founded in 1919 as a Bavarian offshoot of the Catholic Center Party, the BVP argued that Bavaria could keep its own identity while remaining part of a united Germany after the defeat and upheaval of World War I. The Virgin Mary, long venerated as Bavaria's patroness, and the state's coat of arms were natural symbols for voters unsettled by revolution and the end of the Bavarian monarchy in 1918. The lithograph shows how postwar Bavarian politics blended faith, heritage and loyalty to the federal state.
