A color halftone reproduction of a photoprint, this image is tied to Theodore Roosevelt's 1909 hunting expedition to British East Africa, one of his first major trips after leaving the presidency that March. The caption card links it to Kenya and to railroads, which fits the route: Roosevelt landed at Mombasa and rode the Uganda Railway inland toward Nairobi. The identifications come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so the scene should be read with some caution. The Illustration Bureau's copyright line places the picture in an era when photographs like this were often reproduced in newspapers and magazines.
