The slogan makes the pitch plain: a woman who enlists in the WAVES frees a man for combat duty at sea. The U.S. Navy created the Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service in 1942, and by 1943 recruiters were urging women to take shore jobs such as clerical, communications, and technical work so that sailors could be sent to ships. Posters like this one were part of a larger effort to recruit women into the service and to present their work as directly supporting the war at sea.
