Storefronts along Nichols Avenue in Anacostia, the Southeast Washington neighborhood across the river from the older city core, are the subject here, and the catalog notes soda fountains among the businesses. Nichols Avenue was a main commercial street for the community in the early twentieth century, and the National Photo Company, which recorded thousands of street views of the capital from about 1906 to 1932, documented it as a working district of ordinary shops. The print was once filed with Fourth of July material, so the holiday headings may point to decorated windows or street crowds. The date is estimated at around 1919.
